Gay’s Farm is situated in the beautiful East Devon seaside
village of Branscombe. The farm, which consists of around
80 acres, is run as a nature reserve where no pesticides or
artificial fertilisers are used, and as in organic systems, we
avoid the routine use of animal medicines, and animal
welfare is of course of prime importance to us.
The Red Ruby Devon calves are born in the spring and stay
with their mothers for nine to eleven months until they are
weaned in February.
Steers are kept for a further 20 months and fed on grass
with hay in winter before we take them to a small local
abattoir. Our beef is hung for at least three weeks to
develop maximum flavour and tenderness.
Our free range, British Lop pigs are free to roam in some of
our fields, woods and orchards. They are fed a natural diet,
spring water, fresh air and a bit of mud thrown in for extra
flavour! The British Lop is the rarest of the rare pig breeds,
and is the local breed of the Westcountry. There are under
150 breeding females left in the country. The Lop is a very
friendly and sociable pig. Purchasing pork from us helps to
protect this endangered breed from becoming extinct.
